“Tempestuous, energetic, surreal” – the New Year’s concert with Ewa Strusińska
The Neue Lausitzer Philharmonie with its Artistic Director Ewa Strusińska and the soprano Agata Zubel began the New Year with a challenging program consisting of works by Moniuszko, Rimsky-Korsakov, Lutoslawski and Tchaikovsky. Here’s an excerpt from Karsten Blütghen’s review on Jan. 3, 2019 in the Sächsische Zeitung:
“On New Year’s Day in Hoyerswerda, Strusińska conducted with broad but never theatrical gestures – precise in detail, demanding in expression, driving in tempo. (…) After a light-footed, unhasty “Ouverture miniature.”, Strusińska followed with vividly sharp scenes: a glittering “Dance of the Sugar Fairy” in the celesta, a sweeping Russian “Trepak” and a soulfully swinging”Waltz of the Flowers” with a powerful final climax. The audience in the Lausitzhalle responded enthusiastically to this musically challenging New Year’s impulse.
